Backlink monitoring with evidence you can act on

Record the expected placement

Keep the source URL, intended destination and the reason you expect a link. Store an earned placement separately from a wanted prospect. Otherwise the first missing check can look like a loss even though the link never existed.

Read the request outcome first

A timeout, access block or unreadable response is not evidence that an editor removed your link. Check the response and any redirects before interpreting a missing anchor. Preserve inconclusive results so they can be retried.

Inspect the link and its destination

Record the observed href, anchor text and relevant rel attributes. Follow the destination separately: a source link can still exist while its target has moved or fails to load. Keep source health and destination health distinct.

Escalate a meaningful change

Compare observations before creating a task. A changed target, a removed citation and a temporary fetch failure call for different responses. Include the observation dates and supporting page evidence in the handoff.

A practical example

A source page returns a readable response, but its citation now points to a redirected version of your old guide. That is different from a page that times out. In the first case, inspect the redirect and consider updating the citation. In the second, retry or investigate access before calling the backlink lost.

Use a monitoring result to decide what to inspect next. Avoid treating an isolated absence as a ranking diagnosis. A source check can establish page evidence within its fetch and rendering limits; it cannot explain every cause of a search traffic change.
