Backlink discovery: find sources worth checking

Backlink discovery starts with a question: which pages might have a useful reason to link to yours? An export can supply candidate URLs. Research explains the connection. A fresh check establishes what is on the page now.

Choose the research boundary

Name the target page, the audience it serves and the kind of citation that would help that audience. A specialist resource list and a product comparison may both be relevant, but they need different evidence and different requests. Keep them in separate review groups.

Bring a source list you can explain

Record the provider, export date, filters and domain or page scope. Keep the original file. A missing candidate in one export does not establish that a link does not exist; the collection may have different coverage or a different crawl date.

Inspect the page behind the row

Read the surrounding text and check whether the publisher covers your subject. Record the precise section where your resource could help. A referring domain alone is too broad to explain that fit.

Check before moving to outreach

Fetch the selected page and record the result and check time. Separate a confirmed link, a confirmed absence in a readable page and an inconclusive request. Then let a person or an authorized agent decide the next action.

A practical example

Suppose a competitor export includes a local library reading list, a software directory and a syndicated article. The reading list may fit a free educational resource. The directory may require a product profile. The syndicated article may offer no editorial route at all. The same export produced three different decisions; a domain score cannot substitute for those page-level checks.

Use discovery when you need new candidate sources. Use monitoring when you already know which source and target pair should be checked. A candidate can move into a monitored record after review, but collecting it does not make it an earned placement.
